A cabbie blocked the path of a car containing two gunmen as they tried to flee after opening fire on another motorist, detectives revealed today.

The men were escaping in a silver Peugeot 307 after they opened fire at a fleeing motorist following an argument minutes earlier.

One of the men had pulled out the gun from a carrier bag as the silver Alfa Romeo reversed away from them at speed, but the single shot missed the car and lodged in a window frame of a nearby house.

Detectives are urging the driver of the maroon-coloured cab to come forward.

The argument between the two men and the driver of the Alfa Romeo in Leonard Road, Forest Gate, east London, around 8pm on December 20.

As it reversed into Field Road, the driver collided with a parked blue VW Polo, damaging the drivers door.

The men ran after the car, fired the shot, before jumping into their car and sped off into Leonard Road where their path was blocked by the taxi.

The men managed to turn into Eric Road and escaped.

The men are described as black and the shooting is being investigated by Trident officers who tackle black on black gun crime.
