Rwanda: Taxi Drivers to Get Uniforms
Taxi drivers operating in Kigali City are to start wearing uniforms. According to Col. (rtd) Dodo Twahirwa, the Director of the Association for Transport Companies (ATRACO),the move to ease identification of the drivers and conductors will enhance the smooth running of the passenger transport business. Twahirwa, who was Sunday, December 18, presiding over a one-day meeting with various stakeholders of ATRACO at La Palisse Hotel, also emphasized the need for the conductors to spare a seat for themselves.
He also appealed to taxi owners to register with ATRACO and be given an identification numbers.
"We established this programme in order to render better services. We register the driver, the car owner and provide an identification number for the car. In case of an accident, this helps locate the culprits," Twahirwa.underscored and warned the drivers and conductors against violating the new measures.
The ATRACO boss also implored passengers to be on the look out for errant drivers and to report incidences of indiscipline to the law enforcement authorities.
The meeting was organized to review ATRACO achievements and, Twahirwa told the members that a cooperative bank will soon be opened for them to access loans. He further disclosed that ATRACO had registered with leading insurance companies like COGEAR for life assurance and SORAS for the provision of medical insurance.
