Despite a massive demonstration by taxi operators in Hanover on Tuesday, the Ministry of Transport says there are no plans at this time to grant them a route from Lucea to Negril.

Tuesday the operators protested against what they claimed was unfair treatment by members of the Transport Authority.

However, speaking with RJR News Tuesday night, Communications Manager at the Transport Authority, Petra Keane Williams, said the route is reserved for buses.

However she says a survey is being done to determine if changes can be made.

The demonstration along the Industry Cove main road forced several tour buses heading towards Negril to divert.

And Transport Minister Robert Pickersgill has issued a stern warning to taxi operators who continue to transport passengers without the proper documentation.

Speaking at Tuesday's official opening of the Linstead taxi stand in St. Catherine, Mr. Pickersgill said the government will be ensuring that all taxi operators move to have their status regularised.

Mr. Pickersgill, who is also the Member of Parliament for the area, announced that in the coming weeks the police will be clamping down on taxi operators who park their units near the Rose Duncan Park in the town centre.

He instructed the operators to utilise a nearby parcel of land on King Street to pick up passengers.

Mr. Pickersgill said that the piece of land is earmarked for the Linstead Transportation Centre.
