A Victoria area taxi driver was just doing his job when he went to pick up a fare outside a pub in Brentwood Bay on Nov. 22. When he arrived at the pub, the man who had called for the ride had left already.

A short while later, a man — who was later learned to be the same person who called for the cab in the first place — flagged down the taxi on Wallace Drive. The man was driven for a short distance, then asked the cab driver to pull over, which he did. According to the police report, a dispute over the fare ended when the young man produced a knife and demanded money. The driver handed over some cash, and called police once the man had departed.

A police search of the area failed to locate the suspect, however police arrested Greg WAlter McCowan later the same day.

McCowan, 21, is formerly of Brentwood Bay. He was charged with one count of robbery with a weapon under section 334(b) of the Criminal Code. McCowan appeared before a Justice and released with conditions. His next court appearance will be Dec. 13 in Victoria.
