FOUR more taxis are set to take to the road in West Lothian following a growth in population.

West Lothian Council has agreed to increase the number of taxi licence plates issued from 162 to 166.

The move is planned to take account of a 4000 increase in West Lothian's population to 166,369 since 2004.

Councillor Jim Swan, convener of the council's community safety committee, said:

"As the local licensing authority, we are satisfied there is no significant unmet need for more taxis in West Lothian. However, we are required to release four new taxi plates under our criteria of one taxi per 1000 head of population as previously agreed with the trade."
