Terror ride for girl in bogus taxi
A TEENAGE girl leapt from a moving car after she got into what she now believes was a fake taxi and the driver refused to let her get out.
The driver was initially friendly and chatty but after she handed over payment at her destination, he pulled off again and would not stop.
The quick-thinking 17-year-old leapt from the vehicle when the driver reduced his speed just a few streets from where she had originally asked to be dropped off.
She said: "I just kept saying 'can I get out of the car now?'. He was ignoring me and wouldn't answer.
"I just thought 'I need to get out' and as soon as he was going slowly enough I opened the door and legged it."
The girl, who did not want to be identified, was unhurt and after running towards a well-lit area to ensure the driver was not following her, was able to make her way home on foot.
She has spoken out now to warn other young women to ensure they know the taxi they are getting into is genuine.
She said: "I just wanted to make people aware because I didn't know anything about making sure to check for identification. I just didn't think about that."
The incident happened when the young student picked up what she thought was a cab at Lynn Bus Station at around 5.30pm on Sunday, November 5.
She thought everything was OK but an inexplicable instinct warned her not to give the driver her full address.
The taxi initially stopped as instructed at North Wootton School and the driver took the young woman's payment, but then pulled off again. The girl escaped near the Nursery Lane church.
A police spokesman said: "The incident was reported to us and follow-up inquiries were made. I can confirm that we have not received any similar reports and incidents such as this are fortunately very rare."
Police advise people to pre-book taxis and share trips where possible. Genuine cabs will have either a yellow private hire licence or white taxi licence on a plate on the back of the car and must display a permit with the driver's photo on it.
