Taxi shields turned down
Don't look for plexiglass shields in Hamilton's taxi's any time soon.
City officials met with a shield manufacturer yesterday, but say there are no plans to mandate the items.
The manager of standards and licencing with the city, says she believes recent robberies and attacks on drivers would have happened even with shields in the cabs.
But Rogers Musgrave disagrees. He believes a protective shield would have prevented the machete attack this summer, that left him with cuts so severe, he's been forced to leave the business.
Hamilton has passed a bylaw, which will come into effect in 2008, requiring all cabs to be equipped with global positioning systems (GPS) and cameras.
Mayor Larry Di Ianni has said he wants a study launched to determine whether shields should be included in the bylaw.
