The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) is lighting up key taxi stands in an attempt to flush out the criminals who disguise themselves to prey on women and carry out other crimes.

Devanand Ramla, chairman of T&TEC, gave this assurance during his address at the Commission's 52nd Employee Recognition Awards Ceremony which was held at the Trinidad Hilton at the weekend.

Ramlal said that T&TEC intended to light up "every nook and cranny in this country" so as to discourage criminal elements from lurking around in the dark and poorly lit areas on the streets, where they often used the opportunity to prey on females.

He added, "We are currently engaged in lighting up the key taxi stands which many of our sisters, our wives, our mothers and daughters use to and from home. The purpose and intent of lighting up these taxi stands is to flush out the criminal elements who disguise themselves as street vendors to carry out an illicit trade or molest our females."

He also urged T&TEC employees do to their part in returning the country to its "peaceful moorings", after lamenting about run-away crime.

"…As an organisation and people we must have the testicular fortitude to… wage war against the criminal elements. We must snatch back our country from the jaws of these hoodlums. We must as a group as an organisation and as a people come together to rid this beautiful land of ours from kidnapping, thuggery, and other criminal activities,"
