A TAXI driver was taken to hospital with leg injuries following a crash outside a WGC shopping parade.

And the accident has led one resident to call for traffic calming measures on the dangerously "swirly" stretch along Handside Lane.

A blue Ford Mondeo taxi was in collision with a maroon Renault Clio at around 11.30am on Friday at the junction between Marsden Road and Handside Lane.

John Thompson, who lives on Handside Lane, told the WHT that he ran out onto the street after hearing a loud noise.

"There was an almighty bang and skidding noise," he said.

"I heard it eight doors away."

He said people were helping the two drivers out of their vehicles as he arrived at the scene, which was later closed off by police.

A Herts police spokeswoman confirmed the male taxi driver, from WGC, had been taken to the QE2 Hospital with minor leg injuries.

She said the driver of the Clio, a woman also from WGC, was uninjured but suffering from shock.

Mr Thompson said he witnessed near misses along the road on a regular basis.

"It's quite a swirly road and you often see cars going at high speed around there," he said.

"A lot of people have said it's an accident waiting to happen. You always hear near misses with tyres screeching.

"This road deserves speed bumps."
