TAXI DRIVER HURT IN ATTACK
A HUNT is under way after a savage attack on a cabbie in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident happened after a car ran into the back of a taxi at traffic lights at the junction of Sandown Road and Newport Road, Lake.
The taxi driver got out of his white Audi saloon and approached the other driver. After remonstrating with him, the front-seat passenger, who was wearing a black shirt, got out of the car along with three or four other men wearing bright red T-shirts.
The cabbie was punched in the head, fell to the ground and was repeatedly kicked.
He was taken to St Mary's Hospital, Newport, with cuts, bruising and a suspected broken nose.
Police, called to the scene just after 3.30am, are trying to trace the car, described by a witness as red-coloured and possibly a VW Golf. The vehicle left the scene heading towards Shanklin.
Police also want to hear from anyone who might have seen a group of people wearing red clothing who went to Colonel Bogey's nightclub in Sandown earlier in the evening.
Contact Det Sgt Tim Allan at Newport CID on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
