Cabbie helps rescue held brothel worker
WARSAW, Poland - Polish police on Thursday freed a young woman forced to work at a brothel after a tip from a taxi driver who was slipped a note pleading for help as he delivered groceries.
Authorities arrested three men and charged them with illegally detaining the 24-year-old Polish woman at the brothel in the Praga neighborhood of Warsaw.
The woman was forced to work there against her will, and was not permitted to leave the premises, police spokeswoman Anna Kedzierzawska said.
Kedzierzawska said that police were tipped off by a taxi driver who delivered groceries to the address. When paying for the groceries, the young woman slipped the cabbie a note asking for help, and he quickly called police.
Officials are trying to determine how long the woman was held, and whether other women also had been detained.
The men arrested were identified only as Piotr K., 40, Robert G., 43, and Marcin P., 34, in line with Polish privacy laws.
They could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
