The South Australian Government will spend $300,000 to provide three new safe taxi ranks.

The ranks will be installed at Glenelg in the east end of the city and in Port Augusta.

There are two already operating on Hindley Street and North Terrace.

SA Minister for the Status of Women, Jennifer Rankine, says the move will help ensure the safety of passengers and drivers.

"They will include a concierge, a security officer that's on duty, they'll be well lit and well signed and they'll overall be safer places, particularly for young women catching taxis," she said.

"It's about providing a safer environment for passengers of taxis but also for the taxi drivers themselves and I'm sure this move will be welcomed by both passengers and taxi drivers alike."

The Cab Drivers Association is meeting today to discuss whether the move is enough to protect drivers.

A vicious assault on a driver earlier this month led to widespread protests across the city.
