KOLKATA: Four persons, including two policemen, were injured when a taxi driver hit them while fleeing from the Vidyasagar Setu toll plaza on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver was arrested after a hair-raising chase. He has reportedly been charged with attempt to murder.

According to police, a taxi sped up from the Kolkata end around 2.10 pm and entered the ninth lane of Vidyasagar Setu. This is the VIP (toll-free) lane and was blocked by a guard rail at the other end. But the cabbie rammed through the checkgate and tried to escape. Security guards Ajibul Hauque and Nirupam Pahari spotted the vehicle trying to flee without paying the toll and blocked its way.

The driver sped on and hit them. Assistant sub-inspector Syamal Chandra Chanda and constable Pannalal Samanta saw this and tried to stop the taxi but the driver rammed them too. It took a while for police to stop the vehicle.

The injured policemen were admitted to SSKM Hospital and the two guards to Howrah hospital. The driver, Bhowanipore resident Ashok Yadav, claimed he couldn’t stop the car because of a technical fault. “Why did he enter the ninth lane? He was definitely trying to avoid paying toll,” said Partho Mondal, an employee of the firm that is in charge of collecting toll on Vidyasagar Setu.
